The AutoCAD Concept was also an indirect tool for Autodesk to promote the development of AutoCAD. The ability to translate one into the other automatically also brought significant productivity gains. Since drawing tables were the main form of documentation in the drafting business, the ability to easily draw these tables on paper, then convert them to drawings, was important. The system also gained the ability to create and communicate paper drawings automatically.
The system would then be able to combine the preferences of multiple users in a unique way to solve problems and complete projects. Each new user would bring their own set of skills and preferences to the system, and AutoCAD would learn what these skills and preferences were. Thus, the system gained the ability to learn from the user. Not long after the release of AutoCAD, it became obvious to Autodesk that the system would not be successful if it was not highly configurable.
The system was designed to be used by non-draftspersons and by companies that were already doing drafting but were restricted in terms of the applications they could use. The system allowed users to perform all the functions of a commercial drafting system on a personal computer with an internal, low-cost graphics processor. In May 1982, after 3 years of research, development, testing, and refinement of the existing draftspersonsCAD system, Autodesk introduced a “small computer on a desk” called the “AutoCAD Concept”.
